Cathedral of St James, Šibenik

Šibenik's Renaissance cathedral, built entirely of stone and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List; the one sight not to miss in the city.

Why it's worth it

The cathedral of St James (Katedrala sv. Jakova) stands on a square in the middle of Šibenik's old town, by the waterfront. Built over more than a century in the 15th and 16th centuries, it is famous for being constructed entirely of stone, including its vaulted roof and dome, and for the frieze of carved heads around the outside of the apses. It is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Walk around the outside first to see the heads and the stonework, then go in to see the baptistery and the interplay of light in the dome. The square in front is a good place to sit afterwards. It is an active church; services take priority over sightseeing.
